Chapter Eight

The king had shown Lucy to the supply room, where she had expected to find things like hiking gear and tools. Instead, the shelves were filled with every kind of magic loom rubber band she could ever dream of. Not having much time, she chose envelopes at random, hoping they would be of use to her later on.

“Elana would not have gone through the back volcano entrance. You will need to go the long way through the valley, across the fields, through the forest, through the kingdom gates, and over the mountain range, if she made it that far.” Lucy nodded and began walking down the stone steps of the fuchsia castle. “Oh, and Lucy,” said the graying king, “She likes fire blossoms.”

Lucy nodded and waved back to both the king and Alyssa as she began her journey. She walked down the winding path of the great castle, taking in the scenery as she went. She knew very little about Elana, but it seemed they shared a curiosity for new things. Hadn’t Lucy herself wanted something more exciting than her dull life at 163 Terrier Square? She had been drawn to the possibilities that the magic loom could offer her. Maybe Elana felt the same way about exploring the unknown.

Lucy wandered through the valley, hoping she was going in the right direction. Instead of meadows of peonies, there were strange flowers that looked like pinwheels. She picked one up and spun it. Suddenly, all of the pinwheels in the meadow began to spin, faster and faster. The wind picked up, and Lucy watched as the field began to whir, building wild, swirling winds. The peaceful lavender clouds above her turned to a dark violet, and funnel clouds formed over the meadow. Twisters! Lucy didn’t know what to do. There was a copper-colored bush nearby, and she crawled over to it on the side against the wind and held onto it tightly. In the small bit of relief she had under the bush, whose bright copper leaves were quickly flying off their branches, Lucy searched through her bag of supplies for some help. She tossed through bands that read Cotton Candy, Bubbles, and Quicksand. None of those would help. With the wind whipping at her face, Lucy finally came across an envelope that was labeled Cape.

Thankful for her magic loom and its sparkling hook, Lucy strung hundreds of crimson magic bands together in a flash. She had loomed an amazing cape, perhaps even better than that of the most powerful superhero. She tied the ends of the cape around her neck, letting the rest of it flow impressively behind her.

Standing up from beneath the protective shrub, Lucy darted into the wind. She soared up and up and up, dodging the pinwheel flowers that had flown into the air as sharply as spinning buzz saws. Up high, the violet twisters looked like dancers floating across a grand stage. With the wind under her cape, Lucy rose above to the calm lavender clouds and breathed in the fresh air.
